Broder Café in Southeast Portland is a cozy spot that brings a distinctly Scandinavian flavor to brunch and breakfast. Positioned a bit off the more crowded inner-city areas, it feels like a neighborhood nook where you can settle in for a slower, more intentional meal focused on Northern European comfort food.

The café specializes in Swedish and broader Scandinavian dishes, offering both traditional and creative interpretations. The atmosphere tends to draw locals who appreciate a blend of casual dining with thoughtfully prepared plates. It’s a place where you might find brunch diners savoring classic Swedish meatballs with a sherry cream sauce or branching out to lighter options like avocado toast topped with beet-pickled eggs and dill aïoli. The bread here also stands out, with open-faced smørrebrød sandwiches featuring housecured gravlax or smoked trout giving a genuine taste of Nordic flavors.

On weekends and during brunch hours, Broder Café gets busy—enough that arriving ahead of opening or early in the day helps avoid waiting, especially since the dining room is intimate and typically staffed by just a couple of servers. Patrons often find themselves lingering over drinks, such as a Bloody Mary or a lingonberry mimosa, which complement the food’s slightly rustic but refined edge. The café also offers house favorites like the Danish pancakes with apple sauce, which locals talk about for good reason.

The vibe is relaxed but not sleepy—more a comfortable spot where the food and drinks invite conversation and a leisurely pace. It works well for those who enjoy a varied menu that feels authentic but isn't overly formal. While noted for Saturday and Sunday brunch, it’s also a solid choice for weekday mornings when you want something different from the standard coffee shop fare.

With a menu that showcases distinctive Scandinavian specialties such as pytt i panna with trout, pickled herring, and their traditional meatballs, Broder appeals to diners curious about Nordic cuisine or those seeking a break from more generic brunch spots. Regulars often emphasize the surprisingly well-crafted coffee options, including oatmilk lattes and Irish coffee, which balance out the hearty and sweet dishes.

Parking is more manageable here compared to denser parts of Portland, which adds to the convenience for locals making a morning or midday stop. Overall, Broder Café is best for those who enjoy a hands-on exploration of Scandinavian flavors in a compact setting—where pacing your meal and drink matters as much as the food itself.

Amazing food with the Swedish pancakes (the apple sauce is sooooo sooooo good), and great sausages and drinks. I would recommend this place to anybody who wants a less generic brunch experience.

Was recommended to come try the food here while visiting Portland and it did not disappoint. We waited a while for our table for four, definitely over 30 minutes and we still ended up just sitting outside in the cold lol. I do not really blame them though because it is a small place and it looked like there were only two servers on the floor. I had the Lost Eggs with a side of skivers. I have never had any sort of Nordic or Scandinavian food but I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was! It was a little pricey but it was still delicious, especially the skivers. They practically melt in your mouth and are even more tasty when you put the lingonberry jam on them. Despite the long wait, the food made it all worth it. I look forward to coming back here again next time I am in town!

A very very good breakfast. The food reminded me of what I used to get at a huge Scandinavian festival in North Dakota. I got their pork belly hash and my partner got their smoked trout version. Both were excellent. Their pickled herring was good too. Give this place a go.

As a native Finnish born citizen, this place is amazing. It’s out of the inner city so it’s not hard to find parking. I recommend coming before they open because they WILL get busy. The salmon cakes were fantastic, I had a lingonberry mimosa and it tasted amazing. They have salmiakki (licorice) shots you can have and they are awesome as a European.

Great spot for weekday brunch, or Scandinavian food in general. The food is excellent with a wide assortment of items from all over Scandinavia with the bread being a highlight. The service is good but nothing special. Expect a bit of a wait, but its worth it. Definitely plan on coming back next time I'm in town.

This is my first time at broder and we had an amazing experience. The wait time was long and we had littles with us but the staff made us feel comfortable and ensure we would be taken care of accordingly. Once inside the staff was quick to get our food going and it was delicious! As a new parent with two other mama friends also with littles. We often don’t go out to outings in fear of meltdowns etc. the staff ensure we were welcomed and made us feel so safe and we had a blast. Definitely will come back again soon! Thank you Broder Cafe

Amazing food and place. We had such a good brunch there. The 45 minute wait was definitely worth it. The Swedish pancakes and egg-mushroom dish we ate were both really good. Definitely recommend going here, just come 30 minutes in advance if you hope to get a table.
